On September 2, 2013, Labor Day, Diana Nyad completed her historic swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida when she arrived on Smathers Beach in Key West. (My photos and comments from that day can be seen in the archive under September, 2013.) The continuous swim took her 52 hours 54 minutes, being successful on her fifth attempt. On Labor Day, September 1, 2014 she returned to Key West to be honored with a plaque commemorating the accomplishment. Before the ceremony Diana Nyad met the current Fantasy Fest King and Queen. A large crowd gathered to see the displaying of the plaque and hear the ceremony where Diana thanked everyone involved in her swims over the years, making it absolutely clear that without all the support the swim would not have been possible. Several City Commissioners were present. The crowd was extremely enthusiastic and happy to see Diana Nyad again. Near the end of the ceremony Diana stated that in 2016 that she and her personal trainer, Bonnie Stoll, were going to walk across America from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean with the hope of making juvenile diabetes less prevalent in our society. After the ceremony I talked briefly with Diana and Bonnie and made arrangements to go with them for a training walk on the morning of September 2, 2014.
